SUMMARY

Oversees ship construction and repair operations within an assigned area, ensuring safety, quality, schedule adherence, and cost efficiency. Responsible for making critical decisions that affect business operations and managing the performance of production trades and subcontractors. Collaborates closely with management teams, Quality Assurance, Planning, Contracts, Subcontractors, Material Control, Safety, Customer Representatives, Ship’s Force, and other NASSCO departments to achieve project goals. Effectively prioritizes, sequences, and coordinates all activities to ensure successful completion in alignment with work specifications, schedules, and budgets. Exercises sound judgment to anticipate and address potential schedule and budget deviations by implementing corrective actions. Engages with internal and external stakeholders on product planning, issue resolution, and process or productivity improvements. Directly accountable for the efficient execution of construction or repair projects, emphasizing safety, quality, cost control, and schedule compliance.

Oversees all aspects of their assigned project area, ensuring safety, schedule, quality, and cost goals are met. They lead the trade teams to deliver quality work on time and within budget while coordinating closely with trade general supervisors for resources and technical guidance. The Area Manager collaborates with QA, Planning, Engineering, Program Management, Supply Chain, Warehousing, Test & Trials, OPC, subcontractors, and other departments to ensure project success for their assigned project area. They regularly brief their ship manager on project status and interface with customers and regulatory bodies to meet contractual and compliance requirements. The Area Manager is directly accountable for the shipbuilding & repair process including cost, schedule, safety, and quality. Performance is evaluated based on adherence to schedule, budget compliance, and regulatory standards. As the primary point of contact for their project area, the Area Manager ensures seamless execution of all aspects of the shipbuilding & repair process

RESPONSIBILITIES

Contributes to the creation of New Construction/Repair policies and procedures with the Director/SOC\Ship Manager.
Understands and manages ship wide safety and housekeeping and ensures goals are being meet.
Participates in the logistic planning and execution for the assigned area.
Participates in quality and process improvement techniques; identify problem areas and initiate corrective action.
Coordinates material and equipment protection in the assigned area.
Coordinates the production/test schedule and ensures requirements and goals are being met in the assigned area.
Monitors trade activities and provides input to the SOC/Ship Manager, General Supervisor and Superintendent to initiate appropriate action.
Coordinates resolution of conflicting trade/subcontractor priorities.
Monitors schedule and budget deviations. Coordinates with SOC\Ship Manager and Superintendent to initiates corrective action.
Participates in the development of management zone work strategy, plans and sequencing with assistance from Planning, Support Departments and trade supervision. Provides consistent feedback and improvements for follow on hulls/availabilities.
Exercise discretion and independent judgment by anticipating schedule and budget deviations, and initiates corrective action.
Provides appropriate feedback (lessons learned, ECNs, IDRs, etc.) to Ship/SOC management, Superintendent, Planning, and Support Departments.
Performs all job responsibilities in accordance with NASSCO’s Mission, Vision, Values and Principles.
Understands and administers NAVSEA Standard Items (Repair only)

QUALIFICATIONS

High School graduate or equivalent with good knowledge of trade responsibilities, ship systems, and shipbuilding practices.
Two (2) years experience in a shipbuilding, repair or equivalent manufacturing environment is desired.
Good written and verbal communication skills. Effective reports are a key deliverable of this individual’s activities.
Good team-building skills.
Prior supervisory experience is preferred.
Successfully demonstrated knowledge of NASSCO’s policies and procedures.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work occurs in both an outdoor shipyard environment and in an office setting. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus. Regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers, operate computer keyboard and controls, and communicate verbally and in writing. Requires ability to commute physically to various areas of the shipyard including but not limited to shipboard activities. Works at heights. Position requires the ability to walk on scaffolding and work at heights aboard vessels under construction or repair. Must be capable of ascending/descending stairs or ladders, walking on uneven surfaces, and transiting through manholes and other confined, congested spaces. Physical dexterity must allow for bending and reaching. Must remain alert and comply with all safety requirements. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is exposed occasionally to dust, fumes, and smoke. Must be able to spend up to 60% of time in an outdoor shipyard environment in all climates. The noise level is relatively low to moderate in office environments. The noise level in the outdoor shipyard production environment is moderate to noisy 70% of time which may include sirens, horns, chipping, and hammering.

Facilities Coordinator

The Facilities Coordinator is responsible for performing maintenance, repairs and improvements to the facility and its associated equipment Their duties include but are not limited to scheduling preventative maintenance tasks, reacting to maintenance emergencies, and duties assigned by the Facilities Manager.

Minimum Requirements

Pipe Welder NASSCO

Pipe Welder Requirements
The ideal Pipe Welder candidate should have a minimum of five years welding experience. This candidate should have experience with [MM1] structual welding as well as pipe welding, as this position will require the ability to perform work on both processes.
During pipe welding assignments, the candidate will utilize FCAW and GTAW processes to weld groove joints as well as fillet joints. In most cases, these weld joints will be in restricted positions, thus requiring advanced-level welding skills.
Prior to conducting pipe welding assessments, the candidate must first accomplish the structural welding assessment. The pipe welder assessment entails four modules, as referenced below.

The Training Admin will email the assessments to the Subcontractor Admin[MM2] Team. Candidates who pass the assessment will move on to Pre-Boarding.

Prerequisite Training

Candidates must complete all prerequisite training prior to their first day of work. It is the Coordinator’s responsibility to provide the Sub Admin valid evidence of a Candidate’s completion of prerequisite training.

Ship Fitter

Shipfitter tasks include, but are not limited to:

Cutting, grinding, and assembly of metal structural parts using fitting aids and rigging equipment to align parts according to blueprints. Tacking and welding of foundations and installing temporary fasteners to hold structural members in place. Performs other related tasks as assigned.

The candidate should have a minimum of five years of on the job experience, demonstrated knowledge of blueprint reading, ship terminology, and different metals. Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW) T-1 welding certification required. Essential Job Tasks:

Lays out work from blueprints.
Cuts, burns, grinds, rip-out and fit-up of metal structural parts for placement on ship.
Tacks and welds foundations and structural members.
Operates high reach equipment including condors and scissor lift.
Sets up tools and equipment at job site. Cleans up and removes scrap to nearest scrap tub.
Ability to use rigging equipment.

Assessment/Criteria:

If a candidate was previously certified at NASSCO, but the certifications are currently expired, the candidate will need to recertify by accomplishing a 3F (vertical fillet weld) test. Candidates who are new or do not have certification records in the company's system will need to complete the assessment requirements described below. Note that the candidate must follow all safety procedures. Any infractions will result in disqualification.

The shipfitter assessment has four modules that are organized according to progressive skills requirements. Candidates must pass ALL modules listed below. In addition, All safety procedures must be followed. Any safety infractions will result in disqualification.

Job Description

Summary / Objective

The Sheetmetal Journeyman 3 is responsible for fabricating, assembling and installing a wide

variety of Components on Navy ship repair and other marine and commercial equipment. These

Sheetmetal Components include, but are not limited to, Ventilation Systems, Metal Joiner

Bulkheads, and Framing Furniture, Cabinetry, Lockers, Ladders and Handrails, and Wet

Spaces. As a Sheetmetal Worker, you will perform work governed by detailed technical work

documents and procedural guidelines. Sheetmetal Journeyman 3 must possess trade specific

tools.

Essential Functions / Duties

• Operates Sheetmetal fabrication and hand machinery and equipment

• Operates shear equipment and press brakes

• Perform precise fitting work in components

• Running lines and leads

• Advance blueprint reading

• Train Sheetmetal Journeyman 2 on advance Sheetmetal processes

• Must adhere to and promote all company safety policies. Wear all required PPE when in

production areas and promote a clean and safe work environment

• Assist leadman/foreman with check points

• Accomplishes tasks in a quick and timely manner

• Ensure that employees assigned with Firewatch duties are in place and ready prior to

begin hot work

• Fill out Job JSA forms

Physical Demands

The Sheetmetal Journeyman 3 must be able to meet and successfully perform the essential

functions of this job. The

following physical demands are representative to the position.

The position is active and requires extensive standing, walking, sitting, bending, kneeling,

stooping,

crawling, climbing, and crouching. Along with such movements, employee is required to lift

parts/machinery of up to 75 pounds. Additional demands are listed below:

• Able to climb ladders and work off scaffolding

• Able to lift, carry, and or push up to 50 – 75 lbs. throughout the shift (including overtime)
